Never Give Up: A Lesson in Determination from Q-Esports
Last week, QE welcomed guests from a local prep school - as part of the QE Connect Outreach Programme - and offered them the chance to explore some of the incredible activities and experiences the school has to offer. While a single day isn't enough to experience everything, one of the standout sessions was esports — a moment that never fails to impress newcomers when they step into the esports arena.
One of the highlights of the visit was a Minecraft scavenger hunt challenge. Among the young participants was a student who found himself struggling while his peers excelled. Frustrated, he threw his hands up in defeat and declared, "I'm giving up." Recognising the teachable moment, we took a few minutes to chat — not about game strategies, but about perseverance and determination.
"Giving up isn't something that happens in here," he was reminded. "There's no shame in giving your all and getting beaten."
With a renewed mindset, he went back to the game, determined to keep trying.

That same attitude carried over to our Q-Esports teams this week. The B-Team faced a daunting challenge, trailing 10-2 in their match. Frustration was mounting, but giving up was never an option. S, one of the team leaders, took charge and rallied his teammates: "We can totally turn this around. Why is my voice the only one I'm hearing in the rounds? Let's get talking to each other, please. Let's focus. We know how they're playing and we should be using it against them." What followed was an incredible comeback—winning every single remaining round to secure a stunning 13-10 victory. |
On the flip side, the A-Team found themselves in a different position. Leading for most of their match, they reached 12-8—just one more round needed for victory. But their opponents adapted, clawing back point by point: 12-9, 12-10, 12-11. Suddenly, it was 12-12, heading into a nerve-wracking sudden death. The pressure was immense, the kind that could break even professional athletes. But #TeamQE doesn’t back down. They innovated, adjusted their strategy, and focused. The determination on their faces said it all. The result? Three consecutive round wins, sealing a clean sweep for Q-Esports on the night.
Back to the student from the local school who listened to the advice about determination. He won second place - a testament to the power of resilience. As a recognition of his effort, he was awarded one of the winner's certificates. Not every victory happens when you win a match. Sometimes they happen when you simply don't give up.
