Boarding For Years 10 To 13
Enjoy life in our dedicated boarding spaces, fully equipped with everything you need to live independently.
Our oldest students stay at an award-winning, Sixth Form hub that offers dining and recreational facilities on multi-split levels. The ground floor is a lively area to eat, socialise and relax throughout the school day with the four mezzanines above for boarders to chill in a quieter area with table tennis and sofas for reading, or a chat with friends.

Unique Award-Winning FacilitiesSurrounding the Sixth Form hub are well-equipped boarding facilities with coffee making machines, washing machines, ensuite bathrooms and fully equipped kitchens to rival any university accommodation. For Key Stage 4 students, the rooms include everything except a kettle and toaster. Common rooms also have rice cookers, air fryers and a full set of pans and cutlery for students to use.

The Full Queen Ethelburga’s Experience
By far the best benefit of boarding is having access to all the school facilities outside of the normal school day.
Boarding also super charges your studies. Every night, House Parents run a revision ‘Power Hour’ and you have access to all the study areas across campus, from traditional libraries to modern common areas. The Creative Arts department hosts the ‘Queen’s Academy’ every Saturday morning for students to use the art or technology classrooms to improve their coursework.
If you prefer a more active lifestyle, you can take advantage of the Sports Village which hosts a fully equipped gym, swimming pool, triple-court sports hall and vast acres of sports fields and courts.
Join Fun Activities With Friends
Don’t let the fun end when the school bell rings. There is a buzz around campus at the end of the day with students meeting up with friends in common rooms, at enrichment activities or in Muggles, QE’s activity centre and home to a cinema, climbing wall, games consoles and a fast-food café.
The Boarding Team also host multiple socials throughout the year – a great opportunity to dress up and dance the night away with friends.
City Visits At The Weekend
The weekend is full of amazing trips to fun and exciting venues across the North of England, such as shopping in Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle, or thrill-seeking action days at Ninja Warrior, Point Zero Trampoline Park or Flamingo Land Theme Park.
As an older student you are free to visit York for a day, or even just the local supermarket to stock up on your favourite meals.
Learn Life-Long Skills
The Boarding Team organise ‘Skills for the Future’ sessions, part of the school’s life-long learning programme. House Parents will teach you how to buy food and cook on a budget, polish shoes, iron clothes, use a washing machine and so much more.
Extend Your Time with Holidays At QE
Stay at Queen Ethelburga’s over the holidays with Holidays At QE. Each holiday has a different theme with activities to help you relax, visit new places, or revise for exams. Facilities across the school stay open, which is incredibly useful if you need to train for sport or use the art or technology rooms.
