Esports Week 5 - A Team Stand Among The Giants
A Team had one fixture left and needed to win. It was as simple as that. If they won, they would advance to the playoffs with the best teams in the country—the highest accolade our school could receive, and the highest level we can play at. The opposition was tough—as they always are. No easy games at this level.
It’s sometimes difficult to capture in these reports how my team reads their opposition and plans accordingly because I don’t always understand their brilliance myself. They lost the first four rounds, starting 0-4 down. With B Team also struggling, I was mentally preparing for a rather grim write-up this week. Then I noticed Ki Kwong turn to Ihor and giggle: "Aren’t these guys so bad?" I didn’t know what to say. They had no reason to be so confident. They’d lost every round and, as far as I could tell, lost pretty badly. But they saw something I didn’t. They always do.
Q-Esports won the next three rounds. Then, the opponents took another three. Q-Esports responded by winning two more, prompting the opposition to call a tactical timeout. “There’s only one reason this is happening,” I remarked, happy to finally have something of substance to say. “They’re trying to halt your momentum.” “They aren’t halting anything,” Ki Kwong replied with a grin. He was right. Q-Esports won every single round from that point on. |
Q-Esports finished 5th in the league and, more importantly, qualified for the playoffs. We can now reasonably call ourselves elite—the best of the best. Over the next few weeks, we’ll compete in an exhibition league called Showdown alongside the top teams in the country, while those who finished below us fight for the chance to compete against us in the Spring 2025 season.
Winter 2024 has been a very, very good season for Q-Esports.
B Team [REDACTED]
Carrie asked me not to write about her team this week, as they suffered a particularly tough loss: 13-1 against the best team in the league. I will say only this: the team was laughing and having fun the whole time, and as they left the room. That, I told her, means more to me than any win.
